118 Mile through Osteen and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!
WOW...what a ride!! Just a gorgeous view of native Florida. Some small deviations....I went up through the Wildlife Refuse up to Oak Hill instead of the usual US1. I just thought that the view would be better. Once in the Refuse....I notice a bald eagle flying along aside of me! How cool is that!!! Well, after about a mile..I notice that the eagle was still following me..he would fly on my right, then cross over and fly on my left. I didn’t know if he was flying with me or waiting for be to die so he could eat me! Eventually, after about 15 minutes, the flew off... Now it is a beautiful day with light winds and the air is about 65 F and I have some great music in the MP3 player!! I make it up to the intersection of RT 3 and US1 and take a small break to eat my Cliff Bar. After a few minutes...about 10, and a call to Carmen, I head back up into Oak Hill and make the left onto 4164 (Halifax Rd.). This is a new road for me. Well first off, this is a very woody area and the tree line butt right up to the road so there is a very nice canopy. Not to mention a few degrees cooler. OH...and gators galore! I say one gator that had to be about 8-10 feet long and weighted about 1000 pounds! I’m staying far away from that thing! This is also a very quiet area...I took me earphone off and all I could hear is bird!! Allot of birds....sounded like I was in the bayou! Anyway, there is like nobody on this road at all. I can ride right down the middle all the way into Osteen...well almost. Being a country road, it is NOT the best maintained road! There are spots that are very rough and bumpy and take a lot out of your body....but the scenery and the lack of vehicles makes it worth it! Well I’m on this road for about 20-25 miles when I get into Osteen. The only issue is that it was the first time and I didn’t know where I was...or what county I was in, nor did I know how long I’d be on that road. I make it up to 415 which is a major road that goes to SR 46. I look at my computer and I’m already at 60 miles...time to head home. 415 is a busy road but has a good shoulder to ride on so I’ll have to make a note of this road! I make it to 46 and pull into a gas station and take another break. This time for about 15 minutes. I get back on the road and head east on 46 back home! This part of the ride is just “normal”. Nothing really noteworthy except for a surprise head wind going in to Mims! Heading back down US1 toward home I catch a rear quartering wind and I pick the speed up to about 25 mph the rest of the way. For the trip...I logged 118 miles, average speed 20.2 mph. Run into the house...shower, get dressed, and went to Ryan’s to pig-out on the buffet!!!! Oh, I lost 4 pounds on this ride....but I found it at Ryan’s! That is how I spent my Sunday!
