Ride from Hell....nice meeting you Al
Well that ride sucked!!! I got the miles in that I wanted but the sun never came out and the wind was pretty much enough to make you stop. I rode 64 miles today…a very rough 64 miles! Felt more like 90 miles with that wind. I took off from me house in Port St John and headed north first….wanted to get that head wind out of the way early! Anyway…I rode over toward Fox Lake and then north on Carpenter. Made a right onto Garden St and then headed south on US1. With the tailwind…I was able to get into a good grove and settled into a 25 mph pace. Rode south until I hit Indian River Dr and Corkey Bells (or where it used to be). I turned left onto the River Dr and I see this guy ahead headed south! Of course…like an ass….I hammer to about 28 mph and pass him like a Porsche passing a Yugo. Well I look back and the guy was nowhere to be seen, so I settled back down to a more comfortable 22 mph. After a few minutes…that guy is on my wheel with not even a hello! I was an ass, but that is just rude!! So, I start to hammer…let’s see what he has….25…he’s still there….27…..where did he go! He didn’t fall off my wheel..he vanished! I settle back down again to 22. And yes a few minutes later he was there again…so I do it all over again…25…27….poof…gone like a fart in the wind. O.K….I’m getting tired of this game. I stopped for a moment and he finally catches up. I do the nice thing and extend out my hand to shake his. Didn’t want him to know that I really am an ass!!! Well I think that he said that his name was AL…the wind was in my ear and didn’t want to ask so I just nodded as if I heard! Well he said that he was going to ride to Rockledge and then back to the fire station on the North end. I still needed the miles so I agree to ride with him….at HIS pace. We actually had a nice ride south…chit chatted away! It was turning into a nice ride….UNTIL WE TURNED AROUND!! Now we are headed along the river headed due north with a 17 mph head wind. Crap! Well we pushed and pushed all the way up to Cocoa Village. There we stopped for a few and downed some Gatorade and woofed down a Power Bar! I was just starting to relax then I realized that I had to get home!! I was supposed to head out to Orlando with Carmen about 1 pm and it was almost noon! I still had about 12 more miles to do in that head wind. Better get going. Well the rest of the ride was equally torturous but I FIANALLY made it home! Little tired, but I should be able to get abck on the bike tomorrow for another 65 mile ride! I’m up to 273 for the week and 1114 so far for the year! Tomorrow…the Fort Christmas/Sanford ride.
